The Juneteenth House Gallery is rigorously exploring the evolution of Black Texan identity. Beginning with the onset of Emancipation in Texas, the gallery space uses photography, video, and wall installation to unmask and juxtapose the many ways our lives have carried us into new ideas of freedom.
The following images serve as a vital entry point into how we want to build this work. Pulling from Adewumi’s personal archive and images taken from the Federal Writers' Project across Texas, we are invited into a space that uses juxtaposition as both intersection and introduction to ourselves. How do we style our lives in times of crisis? What can we bear witness to in this space? What changes when we give voice and vision to the formerly enslaved?
These are just some of the questions we are asking ourselves to shape this pivotal framework. We want you to add more. Schedule your visit by emailing us at info@juneteenth.house
